I was driving down the street minding my own business. I cannot even remember where I was on my way to nor where I was on my way from. I was in a good mood and driving along at the speed limit and then it happened. There it was further up the road on the right. It was about a mile in the distance. It was radiating like a beacon in the night, only it was broad daylight. Oh no, that round neon sign with the red letters, “Hot” all lit up as if I was the only one on the road and it was signaling me, beckoning me, encouraging me, convincing me to come! It was if my car had a mind of its own as it slowed down, and I put the right signal on before easing into the lane. Slowly but methodically I turned into the parking lot and settled into the first available parking space.
I make my way to the building, knees getting weak and mouth starting to water, cheeks getting flushed in anticipation. I look up at the menu: Original Glazed, Glazed Cinnamon, Chocolate Iced Glazed, Chocolate Iced with Sprinkles, Chocolate Iced Kreme Filled, Dulce de Leche, Chocolate Iced Custard Filled, Glazed Raspberry Filled, Glazed Lemon Filled, Glazed Cruller, Maple Iced Glazed, Sugar, Cinnamon Bun, Cinnamon Twist, Cinnamon Apple Filled, Glazed Kreme Filled, Powdered Strawberry Filled, Traditional Cake, Chocolate Iced Cake, Chocolate Iced Glazed Cruller, Powdered Cake, Glazed Chocolate Cake, Glazed Blueberry, Glazed Sour Cream, Apple Fritter, New York Cheesecake and Caramel Kreme Crunch. All those “fat pills” within my grasp. All the choices laid out before me for the taking. With debit card in hand I make my selection, “A half dozen please.” Hmmm three for me and three for Mike. No wait maybe two for Mike and four for me. It is settled. “I will have two Chocolate Iced Glazed, one Glazed Raspberry Filled, one Apple Fritter, one Powered Strawberry Filled and a New York Cheesecake.”
I watch the young chap as he places each one in the box and I silently envision taking that first bite. One small bite of perfection being washed down by a diet coke!
